What we do?
We work with fishing communities and the tourism industry to conserve the coral reefs that they so much depend upon. Conservation areas and marine parks are established and these areas in turn work to restore the coral reef balance, becoming nursery areas for fish and other animals, which spill over to the fishing grounds. More fish and healthier corals lead to prosperous communities and enhanced tourism. As we work with corals to restore reef areas that don’t recover quickly, people become closely connected with the reef and better able to protect it.

What is Coral Gardening?

The program trains community members and resort staff to actively care for the corals on their reefs. Just like on land, highly used gardens need maintenance- controlling pest infestations, removing damaging weeds, and repairing damage… more
Coral Castles

For areas of reef with poor habitat for fish (low in corals and hiding places), we make fish houses out of stone and cement. These hollow structures also make ideal places for planting corals, so with time they become coral castles!  This activity engages people in a hands-on activity- giving something permanent back to the reef... more
Global Programs
The program started in Fiji under the name “The Coral Gardens-Living Reefs Initiative”.  In 2008 work is ongoing in five district level sites.  The work has been extended to Samoa and the Caribbean using donor funding.  New countries and sites within a country can be added, as long as there is strong local support and donor funds can be found.
